As holding patterns start to release, and your nervous system settles, you begin to notice what is possible beyond habitual ways of holding your body and orienting to the world. In an adrenalized, defended state, the default is narrow focal vision. As your system finds a slower, more organic speed, your nervous system shifts from a binary survival mode of perception (scanning the territory for safe/not safe) and can enjoy “the restorative nurturing rain of sensory experience” (David Abrams, Spell of the Sensuous). Notice what is all around you when you are not busy managing sensory input. Notice the difference between seeking, and letting the world and its sensory richness come to you with soft eyes and a wider vision.
Simple Practice
Get comfortable in whatever position you like. Take a few breaths. Close your eyes. Let your eyes soften and drop back in their sockets. With your eyes closed, shift into peripheral vision, and let your eyes relax. When you are ready, open your eyes, and let whatever you see come to you. Let the images land and settle. How does that feel in your nervous system? Notice the difference between receiving the images, and looking for them. (Thank you to Susan Harper, Continuum teacher extraordinaire, for this exercise)
